In today's era, social media has emerged as a means of communication sharing information and even driving collective action. It has undeniably exerted an impact, on sentiment encompassing political viewpoints, personal preferences and cultural stances. This influence is particularly conspicuous in conflicts like the Russo-Ukrainian War, as well as the Israel and Palestine conflict.

Both sides involved in these conflicts have harnessed social media platforms to disseminate propaganda. For instance, allegations have been made against both Russia and Ukraine for employing these platforms to spread information sway opinion (including policymakers) and even influence military operations. Similarly, the actions of tech giants during the Israel Palestine conflict have come under scrutiny due, to accusations of censoring Palestinian content inadequately addressing disinformation concerns and permitting incitement to violence.

Research indicates that social media has an influence on shaping opinion. The way information is selectively presented the persuasive power of networks and influencers and the emotional impact of content all play a role in shaping how people perceive political issues.

Media played a role in shaping the narrative of the Ukraine Russia conflict and provided a platform for global information sharing. For example, during the invasion in February 2022 various social media platforms reported at 21,000 civilian casualties. This platform also facilitated support mobilization, documentation of war crimes and provision of aid to those in need.

However, it is important to note that both Russia and Ukraine have faced accusations of utilizing social media platforms to spread information. Disinformation campaigns are considered forms of warfare as they aim to instill fear, confusion, uncertainty, or doubt among targeted populations.

In the context of the Israel Palestine conflict, TikTok videos depicting the war garnered billions of views. Hashtags such as #Palestine and #Israel amassed over 27.8 billion and 23 billion views respectively on this platform. This demonstrates how social media can bring conflicts onto peoples phone screens, across parts of the world.

However, there have been worries surrounding the dissemination of misinformation and extremist content, through social media platforms. As an illustration, users have been sharing assertions such as the abduction of an Israeli commander along, with circulating a manipulated White House memorandum that falsely portrays President Joe Biden announcing substantial financial assistance to Israel.

Social media has both positive and negative impacts in these conflicts. On one hand, it provides a platform for mobilizing support, documenting war crimes, and facilitating humanitarian aid to those in need. For example, during the Ukraine-Russia conflict, social media provided new channels for Ukraine to disseminate information about the war and build support for its resistance1.

On the other hand, social media can contribute to an atmosphere of propaganda, misinformation, polarization, and distrust. In the Israel-Palestine conflict, there were concerns that social media sites were spreading falsehoods or extremism.

In conclusion, social media plays a crucial role in modern conflicts. It serves as a double-edged sword - while it can be used as a tool for mobilization and information dissemination, it can also be manipulated for propaganda and misinformation. As we continue to navigate this digital age, it is essential to understand these dynamics to maximize the benefits of social media while minimizing its harms.
